"Ariadne's Thread"
For Eleftherias Sq. the design proposal is based on the idea of a single thread, a pedestrian’s path, which when followed the walker gets to explore, not only the «urban jungle», but also the various points of historical interest found along the path. A thread, which potentially, can become part of a broader network that will connect the urban fabric of Heraklion city.
One of the main design goals was to maintain the identity of the existing square (an urban void which functions as a passageway for both pedestrians and vehicles and a place for leisure and socializing), while enhancing the cultural perspective, by adding newly designed exhibition and youth spaces. The design tackles the issues of the missing fragments on the historical wall, the lack of clarity and usage of the public spaces, the unification of the focal points, the balance between the built environment and open spaces and their smooth transitions.
Following the imperative need for a bioclimatic design, the focus was turned towards applying the principle of sustainable transport (newly designed cycling lanes, pedestrian routes, enhancement of public transportation usage, etc) and enhancing the quality of the microclimate, through mixed mediums (new green zones, vertical gardens, green roof, water areas, etc). Also, having in mind the need for the economical sustainability and viability of the design, special focus was given towards the selection of building materials, lighting design and the selection of proposed added greenery (trees and low/medium vegetation).
Overall, this design proposal aims to re-introduce Eleftherias Sq. and its surroundings as a new focal point for Heraklion city and signify the transition of the city towards a greener and more sustainable future.
